Axminster Design & Build completed this single-storey rear extension and home renovation in Symondsbury, near Bridport, transforming the property to provide more space and a modern layout designed around everyday family life.
The client’s brief was clear: modernise the home, create additional living space, provide a kitchen that works equally well for everyday cooking and entertaining family, and introduce a convenient downstairs WC that would also make the property more practical for later life.
Despite some challenging construction and engineering requirements, the project reached practical completion in just 3 months and 3 weeks from start to finish.
A Single-Storey Extension Designed Around Family Life
The new rear extension was about much more than simply increasing the size of the property.
The additional space allowed us to rethink how the home worked for the owners, particularly around the kitchen and main living areas.
A key part of the brief was creating a kitchen with enough practical space for cooking while also providing a welcoming environment when family and friends visit.

Overcoming a Challenging Build
Although relatively compact in scale, this was a technically challenging project.
The structural engineering and underground damp-proof course (DPC) both required careful detailing to ensure the extension could be successfully integrated with the existing property.
These elements needed to be carefully considered and coordinated during construction, demonstrating why even a seemingly straightforward rear extension can require detailed planning and experienced project management.

From the start of construction through to practical completion, the entire extension and renovation was delivered in 3 months and 3 weeks.
Achieving this programme required careful organisation and coordination of the different stages of the project, particularly given the engineering and below-ground detailing involved.
